iPhone home button not working properly

My iPhone 4 home button has stopped working properly - I have to press it in really hard to get it to work, double clicks are a nightmare to do at the minute. Closing apps is now quite hard and rarely closes first time I hit the button. I tried moving some content off the first screen, to reduce clutter, but it seems more a mechanical than software issue.

Anyone had similar issues?
