iPhone hotspot NOT!

I have an iphone 4s 5.1.1 and a MBP 10.6.8



If I use my apple usb cable and plug then together the phone charges and updates in itunes and also does all the other usual things but I cannot get it to work as a Personal hotspot. The Mac says the phone is not connected. It will work as a wireless connection, so I know I have set things up correctly but with the usb cable only, they cannot see each other to work, even though the cables work in other applications ?

I don't have Personal Hotspot as part of my data plan so I can't test for you, and it sounds like you know what you're doing, but maybe there's something in this Apple Support article that'll help:

I forgot to mention, it did work and I have not done any software upgrades since it did, so there is no need to do that.

It just stopped working, I'm in the UK
