iPhone X iPhone iMessage & SMS Separate Threads?

Been an iPhone user since the 3G and I still don't get this one...

On my X, I have 2 threads from 1 person. One is SMS only (he's on a Samsung Galaxy) and one for iMessage (from his iPad/Mac). Why are they not combined?

On my MacBook - I have 1 thread from him, which contains BOTH SMS and iMessage. Why is it combined here?

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Because your using to addresses you can use your number or email in iMessage go in setting messages under iMessage begin message with n I can be reached with
