iPhone in toilet...."Searching" and says "december 31"

A small person here took my phone to the bathroom and dropped it in the toilet.

I did not immediately turn it on, but did turn it on about 20 minutes after he dug it out. (Oops.) Anyways, it turns on on the charger, goes to my home screen, touchscreen is responsive, but says "Searching" in the upper left, and also says that it is December 31. When I pull the charger it shuts back off. It has been in a bag of rice for 12 hrs. The "wet" indicators are not red. Any hope for this one do you think? Anything else I should be doing?

Stick it in rice for a few more days and hope for the best.
