If I were to buy an iPhone in the USA but wanted to use it in Europe without funny hacks would it be possible to just shift the contract over or something along those lines. Is there any legal solution to this?

Legal, yes. Unlocking your phone is technically legal (someone correct me if im wrong) but you would not be able to get your carrier to just let you have it. You will have to to hack unlock it.

It is legal, but there is nothing like knowing you're legit!
