I think it would be great if Apple would add an infrared communicator to the iPhone and make it an universal remote.
What do you think about that idea ?

But I mean fully integrated with an infrared diode on board and an application, so you could for example change channels on your television.
I think it would be a great selling point for the iPhone.

please search the boards, this has been asked several times

bluetooth + wifi are more than enough to take over the dying IR technology, why would apple waste money+weight+redesign for something going extinct.

Here's a list of devices for which the majority of people are using and will use IR technology :
Tv, Dvd, Sat-decoder, stereo system and air conditioning.

how many TVs do you know of that use wifi or bluetooth for the remote???

To the OP, i reckon this would an awesome feature. Of course i'm not sure of the technicals but i want something you can plug into the connector that doesnt stick out, so it just fills up the connector slot that has an IR sender in it. You would also need an app that goes with it as you said.

It would be cool to have it integrated for sure... but you can put an IR transmitter in your headphone jack already which will allow you to operate your devices.
