iPhone & iPhone 3G on same plan... is it possible to switch numbers/sim cards?

If I have an original iPhone on the same plan as an iPhone 3G, and we decide we want to switch phones, is this possible? I doubt swapping sims would work, but what if we took the sim cards to an AT&T store, and ask them to change swap the numbers? Anyone have any ideas?
