iPhone + iPod/1 computer/not seperating ?

My wifes iPod & my iPhone iTunes is on the same laptop...but they won't seperate our music/etc
She actually had to have Apple give her a ton of downloaded songs back about a month ago when she got a new iPod, plugged it in & none of her music was there.

I need to actually get a new iPhone & am afraid I will lose everything since it seems that itunes won't seperate our accounts.
