iPhone iPod playback on multiple computers

I have all my music on iTunes on an iMac and that's where I load my iPhone. I travel with a MacBook Air and iTunes on this computer won't let me use the iPhone for playback. All the music is blocked in the light gray format. I didn't have this problem with my iPod Nano.

I'm not looking to transfer any songs to my Air (the iTunes is practically empty), I just want to playback music from the iPhone. All the songs are ripped from cds, not downloaded. Both computers are iTunes store authorized but that setting didn't make a difference.

Thoughts?
