My iPhone pics are in HEIF format, however, because part of job includes sending pics to numerous people i have been told to ensure they are always in jpeg.

Going forward does changing the format on the Camera to jpeg as default reduce the quality of images in any way?

What is the major differences between the two?

Everyone in the world used .jpg compression on images getting sent electronically for more than 30 years. HEIF is a new codec made popular by apple in the last few years.
A HEIF compressed image can look a bit better (mostly with solid blue skies) than a jpg, but when a jpg is saved at max quality, there’s no significant degradation but the file size will be larger than a HEIF compressed image.

You can send a jpg to anyone anywhere in the world and they’ll be able to open an see it. Not true with HEIF.

iPhones are not professional cameras nor are they capable of taking pro-camera quality photos. They’re snapshot cameras and as far as I’m concerned, jpg image format suits them just fine.
