iPhone iPhone keeps asking my to sign into FaceTime to view messages?

My 5s running 8.1.3 keeps asking me to sign into FaceTime whenever I unlock the phone. If I skip this, I can't view and send messages. What could be causing this? I have a MBP and an iPad on the same account.
