iphone keeps cycling

Have the tethered 5.1 jail break. Wanted to do a hard reset since it has crashed a few times. Now iphone keeps cycling will not turn off. Everytime i shut it or try the hard reset it just keeps cycling.

You gotta use redsnow to boot tethered.
Follow the steps to put it in dfu etc...

So what is the correct sequence to tether/reboot? The problem is I shut the iPhone then connect to the computer the iPhone turns on. When I went to shut iPhone of while connected to the computer is when I got the cycling problem.
