I've noticed that quite a few Gmail push notification apps (and hotmail apps, too) for the iPhone also offer message previews in addition to number badging. Does the Mail app for iPhone offer this as well? I couldn't seem to find an option for it. I've recently added my Gmail account to the built-in Mail app and I'm under the impression that although I'll get a push notification in the form of a badge, I won't get message previews.

Is there any way to get this functionality without adding another app (or at least an app that can work in the background which I don't have to open)?

Thanks.

The app you are looking for is called GriP which is Growl for the iPhone. It comes with Push Notification and Mail Notification. You can find it in Cydia.
