What does this button (marked in the following image) on mail do? I always accidentally click it and loose my mail! It doesn't show up in trash, sent or any of the folders.

Sorry for the late reply, I don't have that icon on my phone but after a little search i found this:

"You might notice that messages you archive on your phone are actually being added to a new "Deleted Messages" label in your Gmail account -- but they're right in "All Mail" and searchable, just the way you want them."

Hope that helps.
 
Thanks but where do I find the mails that I have accidentally archived?

Go all the way back in Mail (arrow in the upper left). Then tap on some account (instead of "All Accounts"), then you will see the folders belonging to that account.
The mails are in the folder you selected when you did the archiving. You can view the folder and archive the mails to another folder (or the inbox) again....
