iPhone mail setup question...

I've got IMAP set up on my iPhone which I thought would solve this issue.

Is is possible without "mobile me" to have mail that has been read but not deleted show up as "read" on my mac or iPhone, whichever device was not used to read the mail first.

The problem is after reading email on my macbook pro, I'll have all the same emails download as unread onto my iPhone. Then I have to open and close each one to get a clean slate and show no new messages.

I use gmail and as stated above, I have IMAP enabled.
