iphone memory question

I downloaded the app on the appstore which shows info about your iphones RAM and allows you to free memory.
Adding up all the memory comes to about 56MB. is this right? What about the other 72?

Well it shows the "wired" memory which I assume is memory used by the OS

You are correct. Wired memory is memory used by the OS that is untouchable by other applications.

Reboot your phone by holding home + power until you see the apple logo, then check your memory it should clear up your free space.

mine is:
wired:28MB
Active:17MB
Inactive:6MB
Free:40MB

Your free memory is being used up by different apps, so when you hard reset you clear everything being used by the free memory which will show more free space.
