iPhone microphone with normal headphones in call

Hey, the other day I had my sennheiser PXC 450 headphones in my iPhone 3G and I received a call. I could hear the person on the other side but they could not hear me. Is this a limitation of the phone? Is it not possible for me to use the iPhone's built in mic to speak to people when using headphones?

You should be able to hold the built-in mic up to your mouth and use it like you would when you're on speaker.
