Iphone music app using data, no itunes match

Once in a while when changing a song in the iTunes/music app on my iPhone, the "I'm using data" wheel will start spinning even though the music is physically present on internal storage. Chews through about 200 kb of data each time I see the wheel in iTunes. And no...I don't use itunes match.

I noticed that before I had iTunes Match too. Not sure what it's reporting. Even when I switch off iTunes Match and just play what's on device it does transmit something.

Probably downloading the album art? My songs have album art embedded so I can't tell on my side.

Do you have more than one i-device?
Synchronizing play counts via iCloud?

Brilliant idea, I do have an ipod touch as well. Are there any settings that could turn of play count syncing?

Just wiped iPod touch and removed it from itunes account. No luck
