Hey Apple I know you don’t want to go around arbitrarily changing the name of people’s iPhones, but after 18 years, doesn’t it make sense to poke a little bit of a finger into the default naming scheme of a new phone? Every phone I see is labeled iPhone (7) or iPhone 11 Pro (3).

Why not insert some code to specify at least what version of hardware it is so people can recognize what device is being shown on Find My? Or is the status quo better in some way that I’m missing?

The name is user chosen, and it conflicts with other names on your Apple ID. You can change it yourself, to indicate the actual phone model.

Mine always inherit the name of my previous device when I migrate using a backup. Someday I'll be changing the name of a new iPhone from iPhone 13 mini to whatever iPhone seems like an acceptable replacement at the time.

I know that, but surely Apple knows that most of their users (at least most over 50 for sure) NEVER change the name, and do not know where to find the name. So why not have the name change to include the model number, IF the user has not modified it. 2 lines of code, no?

Exactly. Until I got around to changing mine last week, my Apple ID listed two phones called iPhone 15 Pro. What the heck is the point of that? And exactly what are those 100,000 employees doing all day if nobody is out there squashing stupid bugs/features that have been there for 17 years and never thought about?

mine are emoji strings. hearing siri rattle off 'finding white large square, wind blowing face, wave, now' is hilariously dumb

It’s not a bug, therefore doesn’t need fixing. At most, it’s an education issue.

I just number mine. My current one is named “iPhone 5” – it’s my fifth iPhone. Cba to think of anything funny or clever and I’m not using my name.

They should add the model name by default, but I do that with all of my iOS devices, and it takes five seconds. Not a big deal, imo.

Yes not a big deal, except you have to be fairly expert (believe it or not, it's true) to know where to find it.

It's the same with any Apple device. Lord knows how many instances of "ProbablyDylan's Apple Watch" exist.
Like how you set up a new Macbook and it immediately says "there is already a computer named Jimmy's Macbook (2) on this network, so this computer has been renamed Jimmy's Macbook (3)".

Smart, right?

Why do YOU care how OTHER‘S devices are named? It‘s just a name of some personal devices.
You could as well complain about parents stop naming their kid „Paula“ because you already now 3 Paulas and thus might get confused….

You know where to change your iPhones name (because you‘re an expert 😜), so you‘re good.

If others have 3 „Bill‘s iPhone (5)“ - why does it bother YOU?
