iphone not connecting to EDGE

so earlier I was at a friends house, initially using EDGE to check my e-mail, and then i thought i'd use his wifi instead. connected to his network and that was all fine, until his network crashed. after leaving his wifi network i could not connect to edge, there isn't even the little 'E' on the top of the screen, nothing. when i try to access the internet, google maps, mail, anything, it gives me an error. I cant even find the EDGE settings menu on the iPhone.

any help?

just FYI:
1.1.2, O2 iphone, not jailbroken, not unlocked.
