Iphone not connecting to Itunes now after update?

I plugged in my iphone as normal after downloding ios 6 onto phone other day , when it connects to my itunes on my imac it states The iPhone cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 10.6.3 or later, my itunes states it is the latest version when i try and update it to 10.6.3? for info my imac is ver 10.5.8.

Any ideas would be much appreciated?
