iPhone not showing up on iMac

When I plug in the phone it should show up on either itunes or iphoto but nothing shows up.

Then I reinstall itunes according to Apple's website's advice and it works.

Problem is that when I do a restart i'm back to square one.

I can't keep doing uninstall and install all the time.
Someone help plz.

if this info helps, i've done a migration from 2 computers to a single iMac.
could this have messed the thing up?

any help will be appreciated.
