So last night while my watch was on the charging base I still wasn't getting notifications on my iPhone due to wrist detection. What's the best way to get notifications on my iPhone while my Apple watch is charging?

Do you have the watch set to unlock with your iPhone? If so, make sure it's charging before you unlock your iPhone. Also make sure you see the lock icon at the top of the watch screen before you put it on the charger.
Yes, set to unlock with iPhone. I'll give this a try tonight and make sure watch is locked before unlocking iPhone.
