Resolved iPhone O2 Carrier Change

Hello, bought an iPhone on contract 24 months ago on O2, took it into Apple yesterday to have the Headphone port + Battery issues looked at as I want to switch to a SIM-only contract.
They offered me a new iPhone 3GS for £45. (Stock clearing?)

This iPhone is still locked to the carrier, is it possible to get my phone work on another Carrier, such as 3, who are doing some excellent Sim-only deals at the moment?

That's fantastic, I was thinking of waiting for the iPhone 4S/5, but £10 a month on a perfectly capable new iPhone is too sweet for me to resist.
