I am trying to forward all my voice calls to the answer machine.

I don't think you can... unless you turn on airplane mode!

I want away, when the phone rings to send that call to voicemail, rather than having to wait for me to timeout answering it. I can press the button on the top and the ringer silences but that's it.. I could still answer the call etc. On my previous phones I could press the "RED" button to reject the call.

press the power button again, and it will reject it, after silencing it the 1st time

The interesting thing about Apple is they don't worry about manuals so much and let people discover how to do stuff, rather than telling people.

Almost any other company would be slated for not providing detailed documentation for a product.
