Ordered the 3GS online from Apple last week, it is scheduled for delivery this week (I have a 3G right now). My mom (also has a 3G) ordered one online at the same time but she received an email saying she had to take it to the Apple Store to activate it. I received no such email. I thought you could just activate it using iTunes. I need to know because if I have to make a genious appointment I need to do it now.

I don't see why that would be the case. You should be able to activate it via iTunes.

What if there wasn't an Apple Store nearby?

All you need to do is activate it with iTunes. The phones are already tied to your cell phone account.

You should be able to activate through iTunes as the previous poster said. I haven’t heard or read of anyone ordering from apple.com and then having to go in for activation.
