iPhone OS 3.0 on 3G iPhone?

Do you think that the new iPhone OS 3.0 software will be available as an update/upgrade on the 3G iPhone, or will it only be available on a new/upcoming version of the iPhone?

It will definitely run on current hardware. Otherwise, what's the point of giving it to developers if they don't have hardware to run it on?

OP asks a legitimate question - we could just get 2.x whilst 3rd ten gets 3.0
Of if v2 and v3 get OS 3.0 it will differentiate the hardware version. Either way additional hardware will create differences.

They could run it in the SDK emulator, and that would mean that Apps would be ready for the new hardware's release.

I suspect we're going to find out that 3.0 will have significant differences on the new hardware than running it on 3G - for example, I suspect background apps might only be possible on new hardware since it would have more RAM.

I have a strange feeling this isn't going to be released until the new iPhone is released... so figure July or so...

Agreed but its more of a certainty in my view than a strange feeling. That and iPod Touch users will pay for the upgrade. This has become Apple Standard Operating Procedure imo
