I was hoping to buy the iPhone 5 with cash instead of a credit card. Is this possible?

I had planned on picking it up in store; could they just place an authorization hold on a credit card when pre-ordering online and then pay in cash once I pick it up in store?

I know that's not true. I have always pre-ordered iPhones online in the past to pick them up in the store. And I know for a fact that they don't charge the credit card until you pick up the phone (they actually ask for the card in the store).

Anyone else know?

I think Apple has a no cash policy on iPhones (to limit the amount of resellers) I could be wrong though

Sorry but you are incorrect.

You are confusing the previous in-store reserve with a pre-order. We don't know yet if Apple will offer a reserve for in-store pickup until they announce the options.

Sorry, can't be "always;" perhaps you meant "until the 4S," b/c they stopped doing it with the 4S.

You can pre-order and have it shipped or go to the store and wait in line. Your choice.

I heard about the no iPhone cash policy, but it seems they stopped doing that after the iPhone 4. There was a way to circumvent it by purchasing a gift card with the money and then using the gift card to buy the phone.

If they do offer a reserve for in-store pickup, do they require a credit card for purchase? Or can you pay in cash once you get there? I have a credit card I can use to reserve, but I'd prefer cash.

EDIT: You're right, I had them ship my 4S. I was one of the lucky few who were able to reserve for the iPad 3rd gen for in-store pickup (but paid with CC then too).
