In light of what has become, for most, an Iphone 5s debacle, would Apple have been wiser to take preorders before the launch? It would have given them a much better gauge of where the demand was from phone to phone. Just wondering.

No. Your forgetting that Apple has been doing this for a while now so they have plenty of data as to which Apple store locations would have the most demand. They just misjudged how many people would want the Gold iPhone.
