My birthday is coming up in june, and my phone i currently have is starting to crap out on me... I really want a iphone and i dont know wether to get it as a early gift or wait for the new one to come out and see if the price drops for the 8gb (dont need alot of memory)... Ideas?

Not likely. They will just drop the 8GB model and the 16GB will cost $199 & 32GB will be $299. Now, if they don't drop the 8GB model, it will likely see a small price decrease.

Since the announcement is a little over a month away why on earth would you get an iphone now? Don't be one of those people that complain that Apple won't exchange your iphone for a new model because you just couldn't wait.

If your current phone truly stops working than you might justify getting one now--but from your post that doesn't sound like the case.

Why would they drop the 8gb model? All prices will remain as is.

OP prob is assuming the 32GB price will replace the current 16GB price while 16GB will replace the current 8GB, etc. It is an interesting question, maybe the 8GB could become the value iphone?

I can see them dropping the 8g. They dropped the 4g once the 8 and 16 were released. Why not keep the same pattern?

For most people 8GB is more than enough. It would make sense on Apple's side to lower the cost of the 8GB to $149.99, 16GB to $249.99, and price the 32GB at $349.99. (or 8GB for 199, 16 for 299, 32 for 399 but I like the first one better :))

The likeliest thing they will do is drop the 8GB model (as has been said) and replace the current lineup with the 16 and 32 at the current price points (when the 32GB does come to fruition, which isn't necessarily going to be next month). That's just what Apple does. It's possible, but somehow I doubt they're going to make a new model a higher price than the older high-end model.

For the same reason there's no longer a 5GB iPod. As memory prices drop, Apple has to give people more storage for the same cost. Hard disk drive makers drop lower-capacity drives all of the time because it would be a waste to sell something like a 100GB 3.5-inch hard drive for $50 when you can sell 500GB drives for less than $100.

The more models you make, the less efficient your manufacturing process is. GM REALLY didn't figure this out in time, and you see what is happening to them. Toyota and Honda don't have 15 extra brands out there, and they're a couple of the best-off automakers.

The ipod touch still has the 8gb and the 32gb.

It was expected that the 8GB would be dropped when the 32GB was released. The fact that it wasn't was a surprise. It certainly will be dropped when the 64GB Touch is released.
