I was wondering if any of this is normal.

1) I absolutely cannot hear my iPhone ring, or alert me of incoming messages unless the room is silent or it is sitting right beside me. If it is in my pocket... forget it.

2) Signal fades in and out randomly. I will go from 5 bars (with perfect clarity) to 0 bars (dropping the call) without even moving.

Should I take my phone in to have it looked at? I have had it since release day and I have lived with it until now, but now it is really beginning to bug me.

If you can't hear the phone ring, take it back.

Signal going up and down is normal (for most that report it here).

Your first problem is definatly not normal. I know this is stupid and i dont mean anything by it but your sound is all the way up right? Sometimes i hit the sound bby accident and it ends up being all the way down without me knowing it.

Your second problem is most likely normal, depending on what extent it happens.

Yes... the sound is definitely all the way up. It will have to wait a bit longer however. My nearest Apple store is a several hour drive away. Looks like I need to plan a day trip!

IMO..the sound across the board is beyond weak. I could never hear my ringer and forget about a mail alert or txt msg unless it was next to my head in a silent room. With iToner I was able to throw on some louder ringers and adjust the volume up a bit with 3rd party software so I'm happy with my ringer volume now. Not so much for txt and mail or voicemail alert. These could all be much, much better. For what it's worth I think your phone is 'normal'.
