The lack of 3G iPhone stock and continuing problems with Mobile Me seem to be getting all the attention at the moment, allowing what appear to be some major issues with the iPhone slip under the radar.
I'm still using a 1st gen iPhone (I'll get the 3G when the queues subside) and there are a few major issues I've been having since the v2 software update and launch of the app store. Though I guess the issues might apply to the 3G as well.
The worst thing is the complete joke of a backup system that Apple have implemented. It gets started pretty much every time I do a sync and is taking around 2 hours at the moment, yet is only 450Mb in size. God knows what they've done but its a complete crock of sh*t.
It seems to back everything up every time whether it has changed or not, which is strange as it backs up to the same folder every time and appears to over write most but not all of the files. I'm guessing the speed issue is mainly due to the number of small files being backed up (over 4,000 in my case) but it doesn't make any sense when it is so much quicker copying to the iPhone in the first place.
To make matters worse Apple have excluded the backup folder from Time Machine, with no warning or way to get it backed up. There is also no option to keep historical backups, which for a lot of people would be useful and I'd say necessary.
I know the backup issue has been touched upon by people, but its not getting the amount of coverage it should be getting - it is broken at present and should be fixed asap.
The application update system just doesn't work. iTunes and iPhone pick up on updates at random and totally ignore a lot of them. An update is available but not picked up, when you download the app again you get a message saying you've already downloaded it (so iTunes knows it is the same app) and when you download it you get the later version.
I haven't seen many comments on this issue, but there is a very good chance most people don't know that updates are available as they are not being flagged.
Something is up somewhere that is draining the battery as well. My iPhone will drain very quickly and get very hot even when I'm not using it and its in my pocket. I'd imagine its possibly being caused by a dodgy app but there should be some protection in place to stop it from happening. Who knows, the problem in the app could of been fixed but you don't know there is an update due to the flawed update system.
My iPhone completely hung / crashed for the first time yesterday. It took me a while to fix it, having to rely on forum posts to tell me how to do a complete reset and restore - a process that I didn't find on the Apple website.
I've been an Apple user for a couple of years now and can't believe the way they've totally managed to screw up everything that they've done over the last few weeks. I can't actually think of one thing they've done recently that they've managed to get right. Yet reading news articles on most major websites everyone would think the sun is still shining out of their collective ars*s.
