iphone purchasing question

i managed to save up some extra cash to finally buy a new phone. most of the AT&T stores near me are still out of stock, so the apple store here i go.

but before i go, since im not the primary user in my family's family plan, is there a way for me to change that so i can buy it when i walk in the apple stores by myself?

anyone else got around this? thanks for the help.
