iPhone push notifications for phantom messages

This morning I woke up and saw among the missed IMs and Facebook alerts on my iPhone 4S that I got some messages from a friend (He had sent some reference links I need for a project). But when I logged onto FB the messages weren't in the message box, and the IM conversation looked just like it had done when I signed off last night. I need to see these things and can't get a hold of him. Is this some kind of glitch on FB's part, or is this a common thing? I'm feeling like I'm going nuts, but the missed IM alerts were right there on my phone this morning with snippets of what was said in each IM.
