iPhone Question: UK resident living in Germany

I am using a UK mobile phone while I am here (a few months) but obv it's expensive to be called/to call German numbers.

So my plan was to get a cheap German pre-pay - but the contract on my UK phone expires early August.

My question is that I really want to have the iphone and use the apps etc but I don't have a German bank account so would have to get one pre-pay (if that will be possible).

Is the solution to this for me to buy both a Touch and a cheap German pre-pay? Then I have no monthly bills once my UK mobile contract ends.
And then what happens to my UK number?

Thanks for any thoughts.
