Like many users on this forum, I've struggled with my iphone's serious reception problems. Iphone dropping calls, showing irratic signal strengths etc, the symptoms are all there. Thus I considered the observations by the posters here and tried the following:
Improve reception by
- holding the phone horizontally, with the bottom of the phone pointing forward, as someone stated that the antennas are on the bottom.
- power cycling
- placing the iphone in its docking station
The big surprise to me is that my iphone is able to obtain 3 bars of consistent reception in my bedroom, where it had zero signal since day one. Playing with that thought, I tried combining use of the docking station with power cycling.
Connect the docking station to my pc, dock the iphone, power it off, then turn it on.
What happened aftwards is a miracle. My iphone is able to maintain the consistent 3 bar reception after I took it off the docking station. I now have decent reception where I had none before, and most importantly, the irratic signal strength behaviour is gone.
I do not know if this solution is permanent, but my best guess is that the iphone's reception problem lies with the programming of its battery management software.
Docking the iphone probably disables battery saving function, allowing its signal roaming to run aggressively. Turning the phone off then on resets the signal tower info in the sim card as well as battery saving program. What I did was probably fooling the iphone into thinking that it is still powered by the dock, maybe actual battery life may reduce as a result.
Thats just my wild guess, but the fact remains that my iphone is finally working as intended.
