iPhone replacement - easy or not so easy?

A friend of mine broke the glass on her (Verizon) iPhone 6 and got a replacement phone from Apple. She asked me to do the switch (backup & restore).

My question is: can I just put the SIM card from the old phone into the new phone and then use the new phone? Or do I have to call Verizon for somethinbg? Or do I need a new SIM card?
