iPhone restore from backup problem

i'm in a bit of a pickle.

i just plugged my iphone into my computer and boom. the phone immediately offers me set up as a new phone or restore from backup, so obviously i choose restore from backup. but why is it doing this? for a second i thought i had 3.0 but now i am just confused.

any help guys?
