Check availability.
Online, you can check store availability of iPhone 3G. Just return to this page after 9:00 p.m. Thursday, July 10, to check the next day’s availability for any Apple Retail Store. New iPhone shipments arrive most days and availability will be updated nightly.

The part about using the inventory checker has been there for a while and many used this last year to check stock for their locations. I checked it earlier this week but I don't recall it stating anything specific about launch day. I think the part about July 10th at 9pm is new text, but I can't be positive. Regardless, Thursday 9pm we'll be able to see what our local Apple stores will have on Friday the 11th. Now if they had only told us which time zone...

If it's like the availability checker from last year, all it's going to say is "available" or "sold out". Which, at least for launch day, is going to be pretty pointless, since I would assume that all (or almost all) the apple stores will have phones.

right - the operative word being "availability" not "allotment."
