I recently returned 2 iPhone 12 pros and 3 cases to apple. I printed out the return labels to ship to Lebanon, TN via FedEx. I wanted to drop off at a physical FedEx location versus a drop box so I got a receipt. after I dropped them off I came home and looked at the receipt. The tracking Numbers on the receipt were all different than the ones apple had given me and that I had pasted onto the packages. I used the tracking numbers on the receipt and followed my packages back to Lebanon being returned on Thursday. I am just curious as to why FedEx would change the tracking numbers. Anybody have any experience with this? Also, the items are still showing on my apple account as “please send this item back to apple”. Does anybody know how long it takes for this to reflect they received these items? Just a little worried because it is over $2k worth of goodies. TIA

the tracking numbers that I received from apple show no movement whatsoever.

Are you able to log into your fedex account and "Manage your delivery"?? I have a fedex account and all my tracking numbers show up there. Check to see if it shows up there and if you go to shipment facts, you can cross reference with the RMA number that Apple provides.

Edit to Add: For your other questions, typically Apple order status won't change much even though you sent it. I've had experiences where they processed the return immediately after they received it. Not too long ago, I returned the MBP 2020 that I ordered, per tracking, Fedex showed it was delivered 10/27/2020. However, even after week of waiting, I was concerned, I phoned apple and they do show that it was scanned in as delivered to them on 10/27/2020. I've been told that it can take 5-8 business days for them to actually process the return. I got the e-mail from Apple on 11/5/2020 that they processed my my return.

When you dropped off the package at the fedex location, did you see them putting a new label on?
Similar situation happened to me once. I dropped the box and they put a new label on, didn’t ask the reason as they gave a receipt and I was able to track the package.
Hopefully your return gets safely back to apple.

Thanks for the info! I just looked up my deliveries and it shows the 5 items returned to apple with the tracking numbers on the receipt. The 5 return labels that apple had me print and put on the boxes are still showing no movement. At least from what you said I am comfortable with waiting a week or so and then checking on them. I am sure they are pretty busy right now. Thanks again for all Of the help!

she didn’t print any new labels out and I didn’t even think to look at the tracking numbers on the receipt while I was standing there. When I got home and looked and figured it out I was confused. I thought when I put in the new tracking numbers it would cross reference to the ones from apple. I am not overly concerned because I have the invoices for the 2 phones with their Respective serial numbers. If they somehow disappear that would be helpful to make a claim to apple, FedEx or my credit card company. Plus the fact that 5 packages got delivered to the return facility lowers my anxiety. If the FedEx person at the counter wanted to just grab the phones out of the box she could have just done that and put a similar weighted item in the box and shipper them off. I am just curious as to why the numbers changed.

Did you take pictures of the items and the box, before you dropped it off? Always do if you’re sending something back via carrier. How many duplicate labels did you print?

What I notice with Apple returns, if you go and print a label, then go back and print another duplicate, you’ll somehow get a different tracking # everytime.

I know for me, one time I printed a label, mess up that label, printed another one and it had a different tracking #. Shipped it back and it was fine, still got a refund by Apple.

Dont worry , thats will be fine !!

I did return mine last week , yes , tracking number were different than on Apple Store app , because everytime we hit the button , Apple generate the new tracking number with fedex ! Thats fine , as long as your mail address and your items barcode match , thats it !

Mine took total 1 week to the refund hit my bank .

If I may ask, when you first initiated the return, did you print it off on the spot or did you print it later? Or did you print it off on the spot but later reprint another one?

I did the same thing - Apple generated the shipping label and put it on the box - dropped off a FedEx Kinkos counter and left without being scanned in.

I tracked it the next day and showed no movement.

I got worried it was stolen by a Fed-Ex driver....

However, I got an email from Apple saying they received the returned iPhone 12 Pro.

I looked in my FED-EX app and found there were 2 tracking numbers - one from Apple and the other was generated by Fed-Ex.

Strange way of creating 2 tracking numbers for one package!

Now waiting for my refund on the Apple Card...

I did it on the spot. I clicked that I wanted to return the item on the apple site and when that label popped up I printed it at that moment. I didn’t reprint anything later.

Then that is odd how Fedex changed tracking number then? When I return apple products and get the fedex label, I always scan it to my deliveries app and when I take it to fedex ship and print center, I always ask for a receipt, I see them print off the updated label but it's the same tracking number.

I do hope that you won't have issues tho. Good luck.

It’s funny that you say that about taking a photo. Whenever I sell something on eBay I always do that. I will look up the address and also the persons number of positive reviews. Sometimes I have to send to shady places. Whenever I do that, I make a video of the item working, serial numbers, and also boxing the item up. My last iPhone sell on eBay had me sending it to a shipping company in Houston. I looked up the company and basically they shipped a bunch of stuff to Nigeria. No doubt my old iPhone is in Nigeria. I also ensure the PayPal verified address reflects what they give me. I understand why folks order things in different countries. When I lived in Germany I almost always order my stuff from the states. Otherwise Europe has a VAT (value added tax) of 20% that is added to everything. Plus on top of that the euro is worse than the dollar. I also saw a recent article that showed that for folks in India it is actually cheaper for them to fly to Dubai and back to purchase a new iPhone pro than buying in their home country. Lastly there were no duplicate labels printed but I can still pull up the initial ones when clicking on the purchased items on apple.

Glad it worked out for you! And thank you very much for sharing it with me 😄. It relieves me that the same thing happened to you and everything worked fine for you!

I shipped my AW4 to Apple, via FedEx. During the process, I dropped off the AW4 to a FedEx shop, and they gave me a new tracking number, too. But, everything was still 'recorded' correctly. I received my credit, etcetera, etcetera...

Ahhh, sounds good! Glad it worked out for you and thanks for the validation!

Yes, you’ll be fine. A new tracking number is generated but the RMA (return) number is also printed on the label. You can also track using the RMA via the FedEx website.
