iPhone roaming question

I'm going to Toronto tomorrow. (From the US)
Besides turning "International Roaming" on, how do I prevent from being charged with ridiculous high amount of $$ because of data usage?

Any tips/hints?
Am I going to charge a lot of I use maps and even checking the weather using the apps? :confused:
