I've seen other postings like this one here on MR, but I have not found a resolution. Similarly, I did Google searches, but the results I got back were from confused people like me.

Here's the problem...

My iPhone has several email (IMAP) accounts. Today, for some reason, I have a red bubble on the iphone's email app announcing that I have 90 unread messages. These messages are scattered among the email accounts.

However, not on the iPhone, the email server itself or on any of the other IMAP email accounts are there actually any messages.

I've tried deleting trash even though it says the "unread messages" are in the inbox. Yet, sliding to see them shows an empty screen with "no messages"!

This is iOS 8.02 so maybe this is a new bug?

No idea how to fix it.

Suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,
