Curious how much you guys would've preferred drop in updated internals in the SE1 body vs the SE2 as it is which some are calling the 8S or 9

50/50?

Me: No, upgrading from the iPhone 7

Mom: Yes, upgrading from 2016 SE

Mind, a lot of people actually referred to the 2016 SE as the "5SE" (I've seen this quite a bit here) or even simply "5" or "5S". I guess I just deal with a lot of non-techies since most of my acquaintances tend not to know what specific model their phones are. They only refer to them as small iPhone or big iPhone. :p

This is so weirdly specific. Couldn’t you have just said “iPhone SE (2020) in the same shape/body of the iPhone SE (2016)”?

My answer is no.

thread subject title updated. not thinking clearly today haha

Would people buy it? Sure... as evidenced by many comments here.

But could Apple make a modern phone in such a tiny body anymore?

People are already complaining about the small battery in the 2020 iPhone SE

So imagine how small the battery would be in something the size of the old 2016 iPhone SE:

I do wonder about the battery aspect and it confuses me quite honestly.

A13 should be way more efficient than A9 power wise, but my understanding is when A13 is peak performing like games and stuff its a battery guzzler. Not necessarily in relation to A9 but as a principle, thats how people are saying Se2 fares. But im not playing video games on my phone all day or wanting to, or even at all, so im not the targeted person to be affected by this.

But for casual tasks, I think it would be more performant than A9 on iOS 13 certainly. and I would hope battery life wise too.

But A9 on iOS 9/10 was something to behold imo. I still have a gold SE on iOS 10 with good battery health, jailbroken, and the thing takes forever to kill for its size. It fell somewhere between 6 and 6s+ battery life or 7 and 7+ battery life on good versions if memory serves.

Im not by any means *impressed* with Se1 battery life on iOS 13 compared to 9/10, but it seems about the same as 11 and 12 did to me which is to say short and crappy. But its like an iPod touch for me always on airplane mode with wifi and to fiddle with tweaks and stuff, and not my daily phone driver at all or ever so its fine. The fact it runs at all is something without choking, even battery took the predictable nosedive (with 100% battery health on this one)

in any case its not about the engineering tradeoffs if thats how they were to proceed, just a preferential type question of a poll. Without me rooting for any sort of conclusion, doesn't matter to me just find these consumer preference type asks interesting/ can lend themselves to interesting discussions I suppose

Got a brand new Tracfone iPhone 6s for $140 back in Nov/Dec as backup phone for my mom. Even when it's just on standby (well receiving *a lot* of notifications but not in active use), it's usually dying by the afternoon (20% or below).

The new SE's battery is definitely much better compared to that.

One thing I hope the 5.4" iPhone 12 has is a bigger battery. I wouldn't even mind a thicker chassis and a 10g or so weight gain (over the bigger 4.7" SE).

No. The battery life would not be great with the 1st generation. It really wasn’t from the very beginning in 2015/2016. I don’t see the 2nd gen in the 1st gen body being any better.

Leaving the engineering questions aside (would they have been able to do [thing]? Not my problem): would I take exactly the functionality and internal hardware from the 2020 SE in the body of a 2016 SE? I would have, yes, when ordering. But after a couple of weeks with the new one, I think I’d stick with it now.

Yes... a big yes. Had Apple done that, they would've brought me back from Android. But as it is, I'm quite pleased with my Galaxy A20 and will be for quite some time.

I doubt I would've done it. I think that much of a size difference would have been a no-go. I LOVE the original SE overall (loved that form factor when it was first released), but coming from an 11, I'm not sure I could've gotten used to it.

I honestly don't know what my perfect iPhone would be - so many that I've loved.

I loved the original SE when it came out and used one for many years, even alongside my 11 Pro however my answer would be no.

The battery simply wouldn't have been enough, so would have to be thicker and heavier which then isn't the same size anymore. Plus the obvious R&D and production costs involved with a new assembly line etc wouldn't have meant it was possible without an increased price.

I’m upgrading from the 6s and my wife from a LG. If it was the size of the original SE I wouldn’t be interested. It would be too small of a screen to do anything on. I could go for a slightly larger screen myself but NOT a phablet. The SE2020 was a step down in screen size for my wife. It was the first thing she noticed and she was a little disappointed by that.
In short if it was the same size I would’ve kept my 6s for another year and she would’ve got an 11 or a 12 when they come out.

I still cant believe they didnt just make it full screen in that size.

Because that would be a completely new phone... and it wouldn't cost $399...

You can't just "make it full screen" without huge amounts of re-engineering. You'd need a brand new screen with FaceID to fit in the iPhone 8 body. That screen doesn't exist. And the screen is one of the most expensive components of the phone.

Plus they'd probably have to rejigger the entire internals of the phone to accommodate this new screen with FaceID.

So I hope that explains why they didn't just "make it full screen"

Besides... some people like the TouchID sensor. That's one of the biggest features of this phone.

I wanted an iPhone X size SE *shrugs*. Still have my 2016 SE. Played with it the other day and after being on a Pro Max since launch, while it feels tiny, it feels so good in the hand and pocket. A phone I feel I could actually rock case-less these days.

Biggest? I don’t suspect it is..at all. That’s not the selling point for this phone, as that’s been iterated many times over. With the 2020 SE, you’re purchasing familiarity with the price point that Apple retained from the 2016 SE and the ever so popular 4.7 form factor. That’s literally what you’re buying. It’s Not like you have the option of Face ID over touch ID, Apple obviously included touch ID, because they are recycling parts they have from previous phones, which it was the exact same concept with the SE cross-used from the 5S.

I've heard people say they are buying the 2020 SE because it has TouchID.

There are multiple selling points for this phone... size... price... and yes... TouchID.

Why would you say TouchID isn't a consideration at all for why people are interested in this phone?

Have you asked everyone?

Hey everyone... tell RP that you love TouchID! :p

And if they make a Plus-sized 2020 SE... I would buy it because it has TouchID.

Some......not all. I get why they didnt just go full screen, but many of us with the original SE where hoping for a full screen in original SE size.

Originally, yes. But after using the SE (2020) for a couple of weeks I had to say no, since I have come to enjoy the larger screen. I make far fewer mistakes typing messages with the 4.7 screen size. Mind you, I don't want anything bigger though.

+1 for TouchID, it is definitely a feature the new SE had that I wanted!

Definitely got it for TouchID since all the Pluses were out of stock everywhere. Would have rather had the SE2020+, but oh well...
