iPhone serial numbers

Im selling my iPhone on ebay and have had a question from a potential buyer:

hi would it be possible to have the serial number so i can call apple to make sure its not blocked when i receive it if i hit buynow as it happend to me before and i lost out on £300

I was wondering if giving out the serial number matters? I have seen people who screenshot itunes blare this out. Whats the reason for it?
