Interesting find regarding iPhone 4 signal loss while holding in left hand. I have two ip4's and both have the problem which can be repeated consistantly.

I added a Zagg Invisible Shield to one of my phones and I no longer lose signal. Not sure why, but evidently the problem is not just related to the aluminum band, but the glass as well.

this has actually already been discussed. Some electronics buff noted the issue being the phone looking for a different cell tower signal due to attenuation from your fingers touching different parts of the phone. When you attenuate the signal the math that is in the software does something funky and eventually loses all signal and doesn't connect until you stop attenuating it. So, i'm very curious to see what a "Software" fix will provide the users who have this GOD awful, life altering issue.
