I doubt it. Looks like the max is ever so smaller, and a good case should hold the phone securely.

Indeed:

XS Max: 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7 mm (6.20 x 3.05 x 0.30 in)
8 Plus: 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5 mm (6.24 x 3.07 x 0.30 in)

It might fit, but it will be less snug.

The cameras are in different areas/orientation anyways, 8+ cases wont work.
