I have been wanting to upgrade my 5S for about a year. I love the size of the 5S but the trend appears not to be in vogue. Anyone heard of whether Apple is consider a return to a lovely pocket size phone like the 5S?

I saw a 5s yesterday and ... marveled how small it was. I would love that small form factor for about 10 mins, then go back to my Xs MAX. The idea of not having to use a case and be able to walk with my phone in my back pocket without it pulling my pants down is definitely attractive.

I think the rumored 5.4” phone for 2020 will be the closest seen. Given they were able to take the same overall size of the 5.5” phones and make them 6.5”, I imagine a 5.4” all screen phone wouldn’t be terribly larger than the 5S.

I owned a iPhone SE for roughly 3 years, and I liked the small size too. I would consider a iPhone 8 non plus model. It is only slightly larger than a 5S, while the iPhone 8 is a little slimmer and much more modern in comparison with a lot of nice new features. They do not cost a arm and a leg, while being super premium feeling and can easily hold up to the newest iPhones available.

iPhone 8 all the way!

The non plus 7 or 8 are your best bet nowadays, and they’re actually not that big once you get used to them. The issue remaining is that if you’re a heavy user, these class of phones don’t have large enough battery for a modern smartphone use, regardless how efficient the Ax chips are. I’m in this dilemma. I love my 6S, but I will have to get the Plus size next time to get a one-day battery life for my usage.

I agree. The regular 4.7" iPhone 7 or 8 are your best bet. (Tip: Get the 8, not the 7).

I have a Plus with a strong battery and there's no way anyone can get 1 day of use out of it if used constantly. Kept in the pocket and checked occasionally? Yes. Used a lot? No.

There's a rumour of a 5.4" iPhone in 2020, and someone made a graphic showing it would be partway between a 5s and 6 in size. I think this is the best you can really hope for in terms of smaller form factors (and you will have to wait until Sept 2020). If you have a 5s currently, the SE might be an option in the interim if you can get hold of one?

As mentioned, there are rumours of a smaller device in 2020.

If you want a genuine upgrade from your 5S in the same form factor then get an SE.

They can be bought for peanuts, run really nicely with zero lag, zero issues and will be supported for iOS 13 and possibly 14, but regardless you’ll get a years usage from it, just in time for Apple to hopefully release a new smaller device.

I just sold my XR as I bought a brand new 128GB SE to replace my 32GB backup SE I’d been using as the XR was just too big and uncomfortable, and it was perfect! Much more enjoyable for my requirements due to the smaller size and weight of the device.

Even battery life is pretty decent (new device) and although it doesn’t support fast charging, because it’s a small battery it actually charges pretty quickly.

The iPhone 5 form factor is long dead.

The 5.4" coming in 2020 is basically an iPhone 6 size device.

iPhone 5.4"
W = 2.61"
H = 5.24"

iPhone 6
W = 2.64"
H = 5.44"

I have an iPhone SE and I love it. For right now it’s your best bet, though I have heard that 2020 might bring us a new small iPhone though it probably won’t be the exact same size as the SE or 5S.

Amazon has iPhone SE phones available and they are pretty cheap at this point:

Try to get 64 GB or 128 GB in storage though. I went with the 32 and it’s pretty tight.

Also check eBay and Gazelle if you can’t find what you want on Amazon.

The iPhone SE is my favorite iPhone of all time. Perfect little phone, the only thing that would make it better if it were edge to edge screen, but that might come someday with a new small iPhone.

Same here, I managed to score a 128 early this year. It was used and needed a battery replacement and since it's been running all day with one charge. Replaced a 6s plus and can't stress the size enough, small enough to pocket and sometimes forget if you have it or not!
