On my current phone, when it's locked an I recieve an text from someone, it tells me I have a message on the screen even if I'm not in the menu, does this happen on the iPhone, or does it just have the little bubble next to SMS after you go onto the home screen?

Cheers.

Yes, the phone wakes up and shows you the sender's name (or phone number if not in your contacts) and the actual message -- or the beginning of the message if it's long. The screen will go back to sleep mode if you don't do anything, but as soon as you press the sleep/wake button you'll also see the message without sliding to enter the home screen.

You can also set it to alert you with a sound when a new text message comes in.
