Iphone software sever update could not be contacted

I get this message trying to update: Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active. or try again later.

What is this and how do i fix it?. Everything seems normal.

I'm having the same problem after trying like 20 times to connect. The couple of times it did, it said 6hrs to 17 hrs to download. I can't even restore because it tells me the same thing. My iPad updated just fine, and so did my friend's 3GS iPhone, so not sure what the problem is.
