iPhone software update on different computer

Hi - can anyone help me? I'm abroad and away from my computer. I really want to get the 3.0 update. Can I do it on my boyfriends computer? He doesn't have an iPhone but will get one soon. I think the issue is whether the update makes you resync at the same time as updating. I don't want my calendar and email etc to be wiped let alone my apps and music. Haven't been able to find any official advice-I'd appreciate if anyone could let me know their experience. Thanks! Jo
